Ron Meyers

Studio Potter, Georgia

Biography

Ron Meyers is one of the masters of contemporary pottery. He describes his pottery as “utilitarian,” which is defined by Webster’s dictionary as “useful rather than ornamental.” This meaning can be interpreted on two levels: first his pottery is functional and useful; second, his surface design is confrontational. Meyers likes to leave a visible trail to the creative process, such as tooling or joining marks and thumb prints. He throws on the wheel, then alters the shape to a less perfect form. Using Ocmulgee clay that he fires in an electric kiln, he applies a transparent glaze, and fires the pot a second time in a gas kiln. Meyers cuts or pushes a design into the clay to create an organic effect. His line is loose and rough. The images of fish, cats, goats, rabbits, and humans sometime seem frightened or agitated. The color palette of dark earth tones, pinks, whites and blacks lend a kind of mystical appeal.
