Roberto JuarezPainting July 16 - August 4, 2007Reception with the Artists: July 16, 5 - 8pm
biography: Roberto Juárez is a highly acclaimed artist who earned an important position in the art world since his first exhibition in 1977. His travels to Mexico, Rome, the Dominican Republic, and India have a definitive effect on his art. His works are inspired by visual sources across a multicultural spectrum which he then reinterprets in his unique way. Juarez gravitated toward the traditions of Hispanic and non-Western painting, decorative arts and crafts, including pre-Columbian motifs. An Asian formal esthetic, too, is evident in the division of many of his canvases into vertical sections like those in decorative screens. Roberto Juarez did his graduate studies at UCLA, and received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Solo shows include the San Francisco Art Institute; the Museum of Contemporary Art, N. Miami; Galeria Juana de Aizpuru, Madrid; Mira Goddard Gallery, Toronto; Frederick Snitzer Gallery, Miami; Galeria Ramis Barquet, Monterrey, Mexico; Kemper Museum, Kansas City. Awards include the Rome Prize, 1996-97. Collections include the Metropolitan Museum, the Newark Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the St. Louis Art Museum.
